Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)

We at Conflict Resolution Limited recommend that the Emergency First Aid at Work Course is for you if you work in a low risk environment and need training in First Aid.

The EFAW course, delivered over 1 day, essentially covers what to do in the most likely situations to occur.

As its delivered over 1 day, it obviously doesn’t cover the detail of the full First Aid at Work course.

Please note that the EFAW syllabus covers First Aid for adults only.

In other words, if you need training in First Aid for children, please look at our Childrens’ First Aid courses.

The Children’s First Aid syllabus is different.  Some key responses are different because childrens’ bone and soft tissue structures are still developing so the risk is managed by controlling the ways we respond.  Accordingly, we have different ‘protocols’ – ways of working – for children’s First Aid.

The EFAW course meets the standards to comply with the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations.

The course also complies with the Resuscitation Council Guidelines (2015)

The Emergency First Aid at Work course includes:

  • Adult resuscitation (CPR)
  • Burns and scalds
  • Choking adult
  • Communication and casualty care
  • Defibrillator prompts and how to respond (theory based)
  • Defibrillator pad placement (theory based)
And additionally,

  • Minor and severe bleeding
  • Role of the first aider (including knowledge of health and safety regulations)
  • Seizures
  • Shock
  • Unresponsive adult

What happens on the course?

Well, you can complete this course by attending one of our full one day training sessions or, by completing online E-learning and a shortened practical course. If you want to find out about our First aid E-learning courses, please click the link at the bottom of this page to find out more.

Our trainers are experienced, open and friendly. They guide you and the other delegates through the whole course. You will be given a EFAW handbook which is yours to keep.

The course is structured so you gain the essential knowledge and theory so you can understand why we approach First aid the way we do.

In addition, the trainer will demonstrate how to apply the skills practically then you all practice. The practice sessions are designed so that you have plenty of opportunity to get each part right.

Your trainer continually assesses each delegate throughout the course, coaching as necessary and, giving positive feedback so that you know how you are progressing.

As part of the assessment, you complete a written assessment to check your knowledge. When your trainer has assessed that you are competent in the skills and, you have confirmed your knowledge in a short written assessment, you will be awarded the Emergency First Aid at Work qualification.

Is the course difficult?

The Emergency First Aid at Work course is a practical course. Your trainer is responsible for developing your knowledge and skill. Of course, you must take an active part in the practical sessions. You must also understand at least the basics of the English language and, possess a reasonable level of mobility and fitness.

To illustrate the fitness and mobility element, your trainer assesses you carrying out Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). In short this involves you kneeling and applying appropriate chest compressions to one of our manikins for a few minutes.

So, in summary this EFAW course is a fun, interactive, informative, rewarding and practical one. On successful completion, you gain an Emergency First Aid at Work qualification. This is valid for 3 years.

Another key point is that your trainer will ensure they teach both the practical and theory elements of the EFAW course. All you need therefore is to be open and commit to learning!
